Support @GullahGeechee Businesses during #BlackBusinessMonth
There are many Black owned businesses, but fewer Gullah/Geechee owned businesses throughout the Gullah/Geechee Nation. In order to keep the community safe, we are not promoting taking tours at the present time. However, that does not preclude folks from being able to support a number of other Gullah/Geechee companies that are operating restaurants and e-commerce sites. Disya da Black Business Month and Black August, so tek sum time fa support de bizness wha trulee Gullah/Geechee. Tenki Tenki!

The Insanity and Audacity of Racism and White Privilege: A Memo from the Gullah/Geechee
This practice best fits the definition of appropriation which is “the action of taking something for one’s own use, typically without the owner’s permission.” In the Gullah/Geechee culture, my mama and elders taught me, “Disya da tiefin!” This is theft!
Once you steal something and then receive financial gain for it, that is exploitation! You have “capitalized” on something that was not yours. Aaah, but that is the very story of America that people have not wanted to discussed and that is fueling the fires that are burning off the masks that people have worn to cover up the ugly truth.

“We Journey” and “Gwine Home” are both Gullah/Geechee family sagas set on the Sea Islands. Youths in both books learn their culture and their family stories from the elders in their families while also alerting their family members to the environmental changes happening around them. From battling climate change and sea level rise to hurricanes and destructionment, these two novels bring out how native Gullah/Geechees that are holding onto their land come together to face these issues that continue to encroach on the sustainability of the Gullah/Geechee Nation.

Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation (www.QueenQuet.com) has been on her annual world tour since the beginning of the year. Given that the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition (www.GullahGeechee.net) which she founded is now 20 years old, she returned to the theme that launched her into taking the Gullah/Geechee story internationally and themed the tour, “Gullah/Geechee Save the Sea Islands.” Queen Quet has been to all fifty states of the United States and is now seeking to speak to people in every county in South Carolina. She has already spoken in more than half of them over her nearly 40 year career leading the charge to authentically present the Gullah/Geechee language, history, and cultural traditions.
