QUEEN QUET OF THE GULLAH/GEECHEE NATION CONTINUES 30TH ANNIVERSARY “SAVE THE SEA ISLANDS TOUR” WITH COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON EVENT HONORING SACRED TREES AND GULLAH/GEECHEE CULTURE
Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation, will make her next official stop on her 30th Anniversary “Save the Sea Islands Tour,” themed “Hunnuh Mus Tek Cyare de Root fa Heal de Tree.” This powerful cultural and environmental justice tour continues with a special collaborative gathering hosted by the College of Charleston’s Environmental and Sustainability Studies Program on Wednesday, April 8, 2026 at 6 pm in the College of Charleston’s School of Sciences and Mathematics Building at 202 Calhoun Street in downtown Charleston, SC.
This featured event, titled “Disya Who We Be: Celebrating Gullah/Geechee Sustainability,” will bring together Queen Quet and Elder Carlie Towne of the Gullah/Geechee Nation alongside the dynamic Gullah/Geechee CREATE artists collective. The program will highlight ongoing efforts to protect sacred trees and ancestral landscapes on Johns and James Islands, areas that remain vital to the cultural and spiritual continuity of Gullah/Geechee people.
The event will center on the interconnected themes of land stewardship, cultural preservation, and community resilience—core principles of the 30th Anniversary Tour. Through artistic expression, storytelling, and community dialogue, attendees will gain deeper insight into the urgent need to safeguard sacred natural sites that embody generations of Gullah/Geechee heritage.
Queen Quet will also host a book signing, joined by Gullah/Geechee artisans whose works reflect the living legacy of the Nation.
Gullah/Geechee books, artwork, and cultural items will be available for purchase at the event. Proceeds will directly support the Gullah/Geechee Land & Legacy Fund, advancing ongoing efforts to protect land ownership, preserve sacred sites, and sustain the cultural lifeways of the Gullah/Geechee Nation.
This gathering is part of a broader national and international tour commemorating three decades of advocacy, education, and cultural leadership led by Queen Quet and the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition.
