Fighting for History-The Fort Fremont Story

During the annual members meeting at the landmark St. Helena Branch Library, the Friends of Fort Fremont premiered the documentary, “Fort Fremont: The Last Bastion in the Defense of Port Royal Sound 1898 – 1912.” This is the untold story of our local historic landmark and Beaufort’s role in the Spanish-American War.
Penn Center and the Gullah/Geechee Community

The Gullah/Geechee family of St. Helena Island seemed to be singing in harmony once again during this first gathering of what is the Penn Center Community Relations Committee (CRC). The CRC is a standing committee of the Penn Center, Inc. Board of Trustees. It was established on December 8, 2017 in order to improve and enhance the relationship between Penn Center, Inc. and the community it serves.
Dr. King and Human Rights Organization in the Gullah/Geechee Nation

The Gullah/Geechee Nation we’ve got to stay together and maintain unity! We must continue to affirm that we will do as Dr. King dedicated his life to doing and choose to identify with the underprivileged. Choose to identify with the poor. Choose to give your life for the hungry. Choose to give your life for those who have been left out…This is the way I’m going in order to live up to the mission of the Gullah/Geechee Nation.
Celebrating Reconstruction in Beaufort County @GullahGeechee

The Reconstruction Era National Monument which is celebrating its first anniversary is dedicated to commemorating the period from 1861 through 1900 when nearly four million previously enslaved Africans sought to integrate into a free society and into the educational, economic, and political life of the country that they actually built. The Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition in collaboration with Gullah African Diaspora Artists (GADA) will host a conference that will delve deeply into the Gullah/Geechee story of Reconstruction. The “Realities of Reconstruction Conference” will be held at the new Mather Museum and Interpretive Center which is located at the historic Mather School campus which is now the Technical College of the Lowcountry. The conference will give the participants an opportunity to visit several sites beyond those that are officially a part of the Reconstruction Era National Monument.
Shoutin with Daniel!

“The spirit you feed is the one that’s gonna thrive.” So, it is time to decide if you have the spirit that Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah had or have you decided that you would prefer to eat the meat of those that feed you in order to keep you in bondage. I gwine keep standin and shoutin wid de shree and wid Daniel! AMEN!
Get Right With GOD-Holy Convocation in the Gullah/Geechee Nation

Many people around the world make new year’s resolutions which folks tend to drop not long after the new year comes in. In the Gullah/Geechee Nation, many churches have taken to having convocations and revivals during the first full week of the year. Interestingly enough, that first full week of January often marks the beginning of the Daniel Fast for thousands of people as well. When I think of these things, I can hear the songs that we sung on the Sea Islands about Daniel and I also think of the lyrics, “Get right with GOD and do it now.”

Please take the time today to write a letter or online comment expressing that you do NOT want any seismic guns used nor any oil exploration and drilling to be done in the Atlantic Ocean due to the fact that this would cause irreparable harm to the homeland and waterways of Gullah/Geechee people. This will have negative impacts on the Gullah/Geechee fisheries as well as the quality of life on the Sea Islands. Therefore, you stand in opposition to oil leasing in the Atlantic Ocean. You can submit the comments and letters here: https://www.boem.gov/National-Program-Comment/ Please cc the letters to the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition at GullGeeCo@aol.com as well.
