Governor of South Carolina Proclaims Gullah/Geechee Nation Appreciation Week Statewide

Governor Henry McMaster of South Carolina has joined the massive number of coastal elected officials from North Carolina to Northeastern Florida that have proclaimed “Gullah/Geechee Nation Appreciation Week.” SC Representative Shedron Williams proclaimed the celebration in his district in previous years. However, the Governor’s proclamation now makes this a statewide celebration. South Carolina is the first state to join the numerous coastal counties and townships that have proclaimed this celebration within their jurisdictions over the past decade.

Governor McMaster stood up with Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation in the battle to protect Bay Point off historic St. Helena Island from destructionment. The Gullah/Geechee Fishing Association and the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition recently won another victory there as Judge Marvin Dukes upheld the Beaufort County Board of Zoning Appeals decision to deny the building of a luxury resort at Bay Point.

When the governor presented Queen Quet with the Order of the Palmetto Award, he spoke of the importance of Gullah/Geechee culture to the State of South Carolina. His proclamation is yet another action that he has taken in supporting the efforts of the citizens of the Gullah/Geechee Nation to keep their culture and traditions alive.

Citizens from all locations of the Gullah/Geechee Nation will gather on Saturday, July 30, 2022 on historic St. Helena Island, SC to launch Gullah/Geechee Nation Appreciation Week at Gullah/Geechee Famlee Day! E time fa shout!
