Celebrating de Gullah/Geechee and Healing de Land & Family

March is “Gullah/Geechee Volunteer Month” and “Women’s Herstory Month.” Those that are interested in celebrating both and participating in events that are centered on healing can join Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation on historic St. Helena Island, SC in the Gullah/Geechee Nation for “Gullah/Geechee CREATE Day” and again as she provides the keynote at the College of William & Mary in Virginia.

Saturday, March 16th from 10 am to 3 pm, folks will gather at the Reconstruction Era National Historical Park in the Penn Center National Landmark Historic District on St. Helena Island for Gullah/Geechee CREATE Day to work with Queen Quet and other members and supporters of the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition and the Gullah/Geechee Fishing Association as they work along the marsh to ensure its sustainability. The debris that is removed will be turned into artwork by Gullah/Geechee and African American artist. After that, there will be interactive Gullah/Geechee art sessions and cuisine at Darrah Hall. These intergenerational art engagement sessions will be opportunities for people to learn about the Sea Island environment and Gullah/Geechee history.
