March da “Gullah/Geechee Volunteer Month!”
De Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition will host a number of different volunteer activities throughout March 2024 as part of “Gullah/Geechee Volunteer Month.” Most of these events will take place on historic St. Helena Island, SC in the Gullah/Geechee Nation. They will also co-host an event in Florida with the Gullah/Geechee Cultural Community Trust. Alternative spring break groups, Gullah/Geechee family groups, schools and civic and fraternal organizations are encouraged to sign up to participate as volunteers along with Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition members and supporters. One of the major volunteer activities will be “Gullah/Geechee CREATE Day 2024:”
Jayn de Gullah/Geechee Famlee down by de RiverSide at the Penn Center National Landmark Historic District and Reconstruction Era National Historical Park!
Come out and engage in the Gullah/Geechee CREATE Marine Debris Removal project as we transform debris into environmental art and also create artwork about the salt marsh and ocean. This intergenerational day will be led by Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation & Mr. Stuckey and sponsored by the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition.
All participants must arrive by 10 am to sign in to participate in all activities. Only volunteers that participate in the morning salt marsh clean up will be able to continue to lunch and the art creation session.
Dress comfortably and bring work gloves and boots!
Enjoy some art creation, living history, music, family, food and fun!
Register for the “Coastal Cultures Conference 2024” and be a part of the Gullah/Geechee CREATE salt marsh and ocean cleanups that will take place as pre-conference activities.
