Gullah/Geechee CREATE Marine Debris Art Project

Calling All GULLAH/GEECHEE & BLACK ARTISTS in South Carolina!

From 2023-2026, we will be working with Gullah/Geechee and Black artists in South Carolina to upcycle marine debris into works of art through the Gullah/Geechee CREATE Program. CREATE stands for Coastal Debris Removal Engaging Artists Through Environmental Cleanups.

This is a PAID opportunity for established, emerging, student, and community artists from African American communities in South Carolina.

How Does it Work?

  1. Community-based organizations, conservation organizations, and volunteers collect and remove marine debris from the coastal environment in South Carolina.
  2. Hazardous materials are removed, and the marine debris is then stored at centralized pickup locations for artists.
  3. Artists select the material they’d like to use in their artwork.
  4. Artists participate in showcases in 2025 and 2026 to enhance the visibility of the artist’s work and to educate the public on marine debris impacts and solutions.

We want to engage with artists early in the project! Take our interest survey to sign up for Q+A sessions that will be held in the fall of 2023.
