Queen Quet, Chieftess and Head-of-State of the Gullah/Geechee Nation, officially announces her 30th Anniversary “Save the Sea Islands Tour,” a multicity initiative celebrating Gullah/Geechee heritage and advancing the mission of land preservation, cultural continuity, and community empowerment. The tour, themed “Hunnuh Mus Tek Cyare de Root fa Heal de Tree — Celebrating Gullah/Geechee Land & Legacy,” underscores the enduring wisdom that community restoration and sustainability begin with caring for the roots of our culture and heritage.

The Gullah/Geechee Angel Network is the official 501(c)3 non-profit organization for the Gullah/Geechee Nation. The work of this non-profit is directed by native Gullah/Geechees and serves the citizens of the Gullah/Geechee Nation via intergenerational programs. The Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition was the first organization to exist in the world with the words “Gullah/Geechee” in its name. The Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition has continued to work to keep Gullah/Geechee culture alive on the land in the Gullah/Geechee Nation since its founding in 1996. As we now approach Giving Tuesday, we want to make folks aware of why this is such an important day in the Gullah/Geechee Nation. Giving Tuesday started in 2012 in the United States. It was founded by the 92nd Street Y nonprofit as a rallying cry to encourage people to donate to their favorite causes. The Giving Tuesday movement is now in over 70 countries including the Gullah/Geechee Nation. In 2019, $500 million was raised online. Charitable causes are in need of even more support this year due to the pandemic. So, we are calling on all of our supporters to make donations to these Gullah/Geechee fundraising efforts and to share the information with your networks

“Black Philanthropy Month 2020” is “a global celebration, revival and mobilization of Black giving in all its forms to advance Black communities everywhere.” Therefore, the leaders of the Gullah/Geechee Nation are calling on Black people around the world to celebrate “Black Philanthropy Month” as part of #GullahGeechee2020 by supporting this month by supporting Black institutions, organizations, and community projects.

While the Gullah/Geechee Diaspora is broad, the Gullah/Geechee Nation is the political, cultural and spiritual home of the Gullah/Geechees today–and it faces an uncertain future due to overdevelopment, sea level rise, and worsening storms.
Queen Quet Marquetta L. Goodwine is Chieftess and Head of State for the Gullah/Geechee Nation and the Founder of the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition. She has been working to keep Gullah/Geechee culture, language, and traditions alive while also fighting for human rights and self-determination for her people.
