Gullah/Geechee Living History Series Focuses on Sea Island Land Ownership
The Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition (www.gullahgeechee.net) will host three events at the St. Helena Branch Library as part of the “Gullah/Geechee Living History Series.” In celebration of Women’s Herstory Month, Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation (www.QueenQuet.com) will host the “Gullah/Geechee Porch Talk” at Noon on Saturday, March 21, 2015. This is the second “Gullah/Geechee Porch Talk” which will be an interactive dialogue on the history and cultural traditions of the Sea Islands and how to continue the culture and land ownership.
Queen Quet will return to the St. Helena Branch Library with Attorneys Clifford Bush III and Willie Heyward of the Heirs Property Law Center on Wednesday. March 25, 2015 t 6 pm for “Gullah/Geechee Heirs Property and Community Empowerment.” This will be Part 1 in a series on land use and heirs property sponsored by the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition and a number of their partner organizations.
The series for March will close out on Saturday, March 28th at 1 pm with the film, “The Will to Survive: The Story of the Gullah/Geechee Nation.” This powerful documentary features native Gullah/Geechees from St. Helena Island, SC and Sapelo Island, GA and discusses the struggles that are part of the continuing story of Gullah/Geechees.
All events are FREE and open to the public. Books, CDs, and DVDs will be for sale and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the “Fill the Shelves” effort for the St. Helena Branch Library. Contact the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition for more details at GullGeeCo@aol.com or 843-838-1171.
