De Gullah/Geechee International Story in Charleston From Reconstruction to Construction
I have walked along this area and sat along the harbor numerous times especially over the decade that we have held the “Gullah/Geechee Nation International Music & Movement Festival™” a short walk away at the Charleston Maritime Center. The center and the plot where the International African American Museum (IAAM) will go are just down the harbor from where we were standing recalling our past connection. I had no idea that the day would come when we would not just look into the past, but also look to the future together. However, that time has now come given that Brother Michael Moore is now the first president and CEO of IAAM (@IAAMuseum).

Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition 19 Years Strong!
Queen Quet was given a statement by the ancestors in a vision and this became the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition’s motto which has been incorrectly published as a “Gullah proverb” by many that did not cite Queen Quet for the origin of the quote:
“Hunnuh mus tek cyare de root fa heal de tree.”

However, she has lived these words as she’s worked on behalf of the Gullah/Geechee community for over thirty five years and she continues to stand and lead the efforts to keep Gullah/Geechee culture alive and heal the community from the hostility and misrepresentation that they have endured.
Queen Quet on Gullah/Geechee Land & Legacy International Education Journey
Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation (www.QueenQuet.com) is concluding 2015 on the “Gullah/Geechee Land & Legacy World Tour.” This three year tour will culminate with the final leg of taking place for the entirety of 2016. The journey has taken Queen Quet to many cities around the world to educate people on the Gullah/Geechee story and to raise funds for the continued work of the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition, the Gullah/Geechee Angel Network, and their partnering organizations and institutions.

Queen Quet’s Gullah/Geechee Journey to Justice
The marks on the backs of Gullah/Geechee being thrown to the ground and kicked in the backs and whipped across their shoulders came to mind. I could see some running to try to get away from this brutality while they yet called out to GOD for protection. I could see them running from the injustice of this moment brought upon them simply because someone else did not want them to speak up. Someone else didn’t think their lives were worth enough for them to have the freedom to praise, worship, to gather, to speak, or to live. So, they were brutalized and slaughtered in the street. Denmark Vesey and Gullah Jack were hung in the street. The collective consciousness brings this image vividly to mind just as vividly as folks tied to the whipping tree in the middle of Charleston comes to mind and I can see and feel the pain as African folks are struck in the back…
