As we now approach Giving Tuesday, we want to make folks aware of why this is such an important day in the Gullah/Geechee Nation. Giving Tuesday started in 2012 in the United States. It was founded by the 92nd Street Y nonprofit as a rallying cry to encourage people to donate to their favorite causes. The Giving Tuesday movement is now in over 70 countries including the Gullah/Geechee Nation. In 2019, $500 million was raised online. Charitable causes are in need of even more support this year due to the pandemic. So, we are calling on all of our supporters to make donations to these Gullah/Geechee fundraising efforts and to share the information with your networks
Saving the Sea Islands from Sand Mines
Sand mining continues to be a controversial issue throughout the Gullah/Geechee Nation. It is causing environmental harm and danger to numerous communities. We hafa stand fa save we Sea Island sand!

Today, the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition received the outstanding news that there will NOT be any seismic gun testing in the Atlantic Ocean.

The endless richness of Beaufort County is found on the land and in the waterways surrounding it and that run through it. To insure that this culturally rich and aesthetically beautiful environment is sustained for future generations to enjoy and have a high quality of life in, the destructionment designs need to be curtailed. The land, water quality, and Gullah/Geechee culture need to all be protected in this outstanding area.

A number of issues are facing the Gullah/Geechee Nation from sea level rise and other climate change impacts to an on-slaught of destructionment projects along the coast. Join us for the interactive FREE workshop on climate central tools related to sea level rise. This session will focus on the Sea Islands and Lowcountry of the Gullah/Geechee Nation from Jacksonville, NC to Jacksonville, FL. The session will be led by Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation (www.QueenQuet.com) and Dan Rizza of Climate Central (https://www.climatecentral.org/what-we-do/people/dan-rizza).

It is critical that the general public bring awareness to this issue as soon as possible. Stakes are already so high and it is our responsibility as allies to help our Gullah/Geechee brothers and sisters protect their environment and culture. This is a matter of commercial action vs. cultural preservation and continuation and it is our responsibility to hold leaders accountable.
