WEBE Gullah/Geechee: Collaborating for Social and Environmental Justice!
This panel discussion explores tensions and opportunities when communities and university-based researchers collaborate. Based on a decade-long collaboration between Queen Quet, the Chieftess and Head of State of the Gullah/Geechee Nation and Kate Derickson, faculty member in Geography, Environment and Society, the panel will include a discussion of the model for effective collaboration and communication, strategies for including students in engaged research, and tools and techniques that have been useful throughout. We will also explore the complex historic relationship between Gullah/Geechee Nation and the University of Minnesota and how that conditions the ethical terrain of collaboration.
Celebrate World Ocean Day 2021 while Advancing Climate and Ocean Action Through Art, Education and Outreach

Many citizens of the Gullah/Geechee Nation have engaged in Earth Month by continuing the agrarian traditions that their ancestors passed down. Many others have started to engage in citizens science projects and academic field work that will help build capacity in regard to resilience and sustainability not only for the land and water, but also for our cultural heritage community. The next Southeast Ocean and Coastal Acidification Network (SOCAN) Stakeholders Townhall is onÂ
April 21st at 11 am eastern time. The town hall will cover topics related to impacts of acidification on subsistence fishing and rural and indigenous communities, as well as non-traditional educational tools for these communities.

The Gullah/Geechee Angel Network is the official 501(c)3 non-profit organization for the Gullah/Geechee Nation. The work of this non-profit is directed by native Gullah/Geechees and serves the citizens of the Gullah/Geechee Nation via intergenerational programs. As we now approach Giving Tuesday, we want to make folks aware of why this is such an important day in the Gullah/Geechee Nation. Giving Tuesday started in 2012 in the United States. It was founded by the 92nd Street Y nonprofit as a rallying cry to encourage people to donate to their favorite causes. The Giving Tuesday movement is now in over 70 countries including the Gullah/Geechee Nation. In 2019, $500 million was raised online. Charitable causes are in need of even more support this year due to the pandemic. So, we are calling on all of our supporters to make donations to these Gullah/Geechee fundraising efforts and to share the information with your networks
