Financial Literacy and the Journey of the Gullah/Geechee

“Financial Literacy Month” is celebrated annually in April in the United States and Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation called on citizens of the Gullah/Geechee Nation to participate in the month long celebration as an introduction to economic empowerment in the Gullah/Geechee Nation.   She previously hosted broadcasts on Gullah/Geechee Riddim Radio that detailed information from the lives of outstanding business people and philanthropists of African descent including Madame C J Walker, Maggie Lena Walker, A G Gaston, and S B Fuller (http://www.blogtalkradio.com/gullahgeechee/2016/02/23/gullahgeechee-black-economics-and-black-history).   Queen Quet has found that numerous elders in the Gullah/Geechee Nation are familiar with at least one of these three names and some of the products that three of the four were connected with especially the products of S B Fuller.  Many Gullah/Geechees were sales people in Mr. Fuller’s national sales force.  The self-sufficiency that each of these visionaries taught were concepts that align with the traditions of many Gullah/Geechees given their history of land ownership and sustainability.

To close out Financial Literacy Month, Queen Quet took listeners on a journey through the origin of this month and how the exercises at the website for the month are applicable and beneficial: http://www.financialliteracymonth.com/About.aspx to Gullah/Geechee individuals and families.  Throughout the month images of books from De Gullah/Geechee Alkebulan Archive were shared on the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition‘s and the Gullah/Geechee Nation‘s Facebook fan pages as well as via @GullahGeechee on Instagram.  The archive continues to build its section on financial literacy and houses several books on Black economic pioneers such as the aforementioned four.

Although April is almost at its end, financial literacy should be a daily part of life.  So, after tuning in to these broadcasts, take some time to sit beneath a majestic oak tree along the coast of the Gullah/Geechee Nation and read and enlighten yourself financially!
