Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition Celebrates 18 Years!
In 1996, the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition (www.gullahgeechee.net) came into existence when there were no other groups in the world with Gullah/Geechee in their names. Since that time, the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition has galvanized people worldwide and gotten them to participate in the continuation of Gullah/Geechee culture. As a result, there are numerous websites, articles, books, and events related to Gullah/Geechee culture. The Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition still strives to make sure that the manner in which Gullah/Geechees are depicted via these channels is accurate and respectful of the people that are fighting to continue to hold onto their traditions and land. They also serve as the premiere organization for the advocacy for the rights of Gullah/Geechees worldwide.
Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation (www.QueenQuet.com) who founded the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition and still directs the numerous community engagement programs and educational outreach and partnership development, took the time to outline the 18 years of on-going advocacy on Gullah/Geechee Riddim Radio which is sponsors by the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition as a weekly broadcast. Tune een and yeddi mo bout who de Gullah/Geechee be and as Queen Quet say, “Hunnuh mus tek cyare de root fa heal de tree!”
