Burning the Story of Gullah/Geechee Townships and Beaches Into the Minds of the People
Wherein Mosquito Beach still stands and is continuing to be restored after withstanding many storms, Seabreeze has succumb to being removed from the hands of Black people and has been taken over by those in political and economic power in North Carolina. It stands as a painful story of defeat that seems to harken back to the 1898 Wilmington Massacre that was put in place to destroy the independence of the Blacks and Gullah/Geechees of Wilmington in the Cape Fear Region of NC. The orchestrated acts of disenfranchisement that were inflicted upon the people of African descent of Wilmington truly placed “fear” in the hearts and burned it into the minds of many that are from North Carolina. As a result, some fled physically and others fled emotionally away from standing up to hold onto their own property and their own community. The brutal reality of what took place to cause the psychological harm to a community that once thrived is told through the documentary, “Wilmington on Fire.”
De Drum Soundin fa #GullahGeechee Nation Appreciation Week!
As Black Music Month came to an end, the sounds of the drum could still be heard throughout the Gullah/Geechee Nation from Jacksonville, NC to Jacksonville, FL. The drums are sounding in celebration as county and town councils from North Carolina to Florida are proclaiming “Gullah/Geechee Nation Appreciation Week” from July 30-August 7, 2016. The theme for the celebration is “A Celebration of Self-Determination.”
Queen Quet of the @GullahGeechee Invites the African Family to the Gullah/Geechee Reunion
To insure that there is an international reconnection of the Gullah/Geechee Diaspora, Queen Quet has been invited to one of the largest radio stations that broadcast in Liberia and other countries of West Africa, “Radio LIB” to discuss the survival of the Gullah/Geechee Nation and its links to the Motherland and to invite the family to come back together at the location from which many departed to head back to West Africa. International African American Museum Supported by Blackbaud!
“We’re investing in International African American Museum (@IAAMuseum) because we believe all people deserve the opportunity to know their heritage.” Stated Mike Gianoni of Blackbaud as they donated $1 Million to the International African American Museum (IAAM) which is to be built at Gasden’s Wharf along the Charleston Harbor.
The site of the coming museum is also the location of the Gullah/Geechee Nation International Music & Movement Festival™’s “Gullah/Geechee Reunion Day” each time that the festival takes place in Charleston, SC.

De Gullah/Geechee International Story in Charleston From Reconstruction to Construction
I have walked along this area and sat along the harbor numerous times especially over the decade that we have held the “Gullah/Geechee Nation International Music & Movement Festival™” a short walk away at the Charleston Maritime Center. The center and the plot where the International African American Museum (IAAM) will go are just down the harbor from where we were standing recalling our past connection. I had no idea that the day would come when we would not just look into the past, but also look to the future together. However, that time has now come given that Brother Michael Moore is now the first president and CEO of IAAM (@IAAMuseum).

Gullah/Geechee Nation Appreciation Week 2015 will be celebrated throughout the South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida portions of the Gullah/Geechee Nation’s coast July 25-August 2, 2015. Queen Quet states, “We gwine tru de coast fa keep de culcha!” The week will be a journey into the living traditions of native Gullah/Geechees as those that want to learn about this unique indigenous national linguistic and ethnic minority take Gullah/Geechee owned and operated tours to Gullah/Geechee businesses and historic sites .Everyone is invited to come out and enjoy the events that are highlights of this nine days of activities which will honor the lives and legacies of the Emanuel 9.
