Celebrating Black Bikers @GullahGeechee!

Since May is bike month, the folks in the Gullah/Geechee Nation decided to not only encourage riding bicycles, but to also celebrate bikes that are motorized and to honor the legacy of Black bikers. To that end, on Saturday, May 4, 2019 from 3 to 6 pm, “Gullah/Geechee Bike & Beauty” will take place at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park at the intersection fo Highway 21 / Sea Island Parkway and Dr. Martin Luther King Drive on St. Helena Island. For the first time in the history of this event, there will be a a “Best of Show” (with two categories) and “Best Beauty” contest for the lady riders. Admission is free, but for the contest there is a fee.

Celebrating the Earth and History in the Gullah/Geechee Nation for #NationalParkWeek

Funds don’t automatically get allocated to the NPS sites nor is it guaranteed that each site will get the full budget that it needs. It takes the support of the community to insure that the tax dollars are directed to these spaces and not cut from federal budgets. Attendance is a major factor in the reporting that part staff does when seeking financial support to sustain national parks.

Gullah/Geechee Linking Good Friday and Passover

Several years ago, Afroculinary specialist and expert, Michael Twitty joined us in celebration on St. Helena Island, SC in the Gullah/Geechee Nation. He was in the process of completing his book entitled “The Cooking Gene” which takes people on a journey into the pots of the kitchens and yards of our ancestors. So, it was great to hear from Michael who is Jewish just in time for Passover which begin on “Good Friday.” The rituals for both of these spiritual events differ however. Most Christians celebrate Good Friday in preparation for Resurrection Sunday and interestingly enough, while doing so many forget that Jesus was Hebrew / Jewish.
