Celebrating Gullah/Geechee Legacy

As Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Awareness Month approaches, the Gullah/Geechee Famlee is already in the midst of celebration. As the Moja Arts Festival winds down in Charleston, SC, the Fish & Grits Music Festival heats up! Folks will journey to Hilton Head Island, SC on Saturday, October 4th from Noon to 6 pm for the celebration.

Queen Quet encourages folks to continue to enjoy the southern part of Beaufort County, SC by going to a late lunch or early dinner at “Ma Daisy’s Porch” on Friday, October 10, 2025 so that they can come next door to the new Bluffton Gullah Cultural Heritage Center to join her 6 pm for an evening of “Gullah/Geechee Heritage & Healing.”

The evening will be a special celebration revealing new art pieces by Queen Quet and celebrating the release of her new books! After celebrating in Bluffton, Queen Quet is encouraging everyone to join her on historic St. Helena Island, SC at Penn Center between Noon and 3 pm on Saturday, October 11th for the Cultural Protection Overlay District celebration.

Queen Quet will be joined by artists Quadré Stuckey, Zavia Jenkins and Dorneisha Batson at the St. Helena Branch Library as they artistically celebrate “Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Awareness Month:”

Sapelo Island Cultural Day will be taking place on the third Saturday of the month as it has for decades. From the shores of Georgia’s Golden Isles the sounds of drums and polyrhythms will flow back to South Carolina as folks return to one of the largest cultural heritage celebrations in the southeast in November-the Penn Center Heritage Days Celebration.
