From North Carolina’s Town of Leland down to Jacksonville, Florida, the coastal counties and numerous townships in the Gullah/Geechee Nation have proclaimed July 30-August 6, 2022 as “Gullah/Geechee Nation Appreciation Week.” This marks the 10th anniversary of the Gullah/Geechee Nation wide celebration of authentic Gullah/Geechee culture. Beaufort County and the Town of Bluffton in Beaufort County, SC are in the midst of receiving comments on their comprehensive plan drafts. It is critical that both are made aware of how critical it is to sustain and protect Gullah/Geechee sacred areas including burial grounds and family compounds. Sustaining these critical spaces not only assist with the continuation of Gullah/Geechee culture, but also with the sustainability of the land that Gullah/Geechee families live on and feed themselves from.
