Gullah/Geechee Makes a Splash at Capitol Hill Ocean Week 2024!
According to the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, “What started as a small, daylong gathering in 2001 is now Capitol Hill Ocean Week (CHOW), the nation’s premier annual conference examining current marine, coastal and Great Lakes policy issues. CHOW brings together scientists, policymakers, scholars, businesses and conservation leaders to address pressing conservation, science, and management issues facing our oceans and Great Lakes.” Due to the fact that the Sea Islands of the Gullah/Geechee Nation are in the Atlantic Ocean, Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation (www.QueenQuet.com) and Founder of the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition has been engaged in CHOW for several years. She once again made a splash in Washington, DC on and off stage during CHOW Week 2024:
This year the theme for CHOW was “Leadership.” Queen Quet continues to exemplify leadership in the ocean justice arena as she works to protect sacred areas such as the Blake Plateau:
Queen Quet is calling on all those that care about the health of our ocean to stand up to help conserve and protect the Blake Plateau by signing on here: https://conserveblakeplateau.org/
