Jayn de Gullah/Geechee at de 39th Annual Heritage Days Celebration!

Hunnuh chillun, bring friends and de famlee and jayn we pun historic St. Helena Island, SC November 9-11, 2023! The 39th Annual Heritage Days Celebration will take place at Penn Center, Inc. Come engage in the continuing stand for justice while being a part of one of the largest Black celebrations in the southeast.

Returning to the Heritage Days stage this year will be Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation. E gwine be a time fa tru! Cum fa jayn we and whey hunnuh dancin shoe!

Schedule of events:

Thursday, Nov. 9:

  • Gullah Roots Village; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Formal opening of the festival; 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Youth theatrical performance; 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Lowcountry supper in the Emory Campbell Dining Hall; 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
  • Old fashion prayer service; 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
  • Artist Reception titled “Sam Doyle Coming Home”; 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Friday, Nov. 10:

  • Family and Friends Day; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Food vendors; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Arts, Authors’ Row; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Heritage Symposium: Educator’s Professional Development; 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Old School Fish Fry, Oyster Roast & Crab Crack; 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Saturday, Nov. 11:

  • Heritage Days Parade; 9 a.m.
  • Heritage Days Center Stage Program; 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Soul Slide Dance Party at the Frissell Community House; 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Crafts and food vendors; 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Activities at MLK Park featuring HBCU representatives from South Carolina and Georgia; 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Reconstruction Park; 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Young Professionals Mixer in Emory Campbell Dining Hall; 8 p.m. to 12 a.m.

There is a $5 admission fee and free parking on the Penn Center campus.
