On Sunday, June 1, 2014 at 4:00 PM on the corner of Calhoun and Concord Streets, at the proposed site for the International African American Museum and in conjunction with Piccolo Spoleto, the family of late civil rights activist Esau Jenkins (who was a founder of the Progressive Club on Johns Island, SC in the Gullah/Geechee Nation) and the Thomas Mayhem Pinckney Alliance of the Preservation Society of Charleston will host an event to celebrate the departure of a portion of his iconic VW bus to its new home in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC.
