WEBE Gullah/Geechee: Collaborating for Social and Environmental Justice!

This panel discussion explores tensions and opportunities when communities and university-based researchers collaborate. Based on a decade-long collaboration between Queen Quet, the Chieftess and Head of State of the Gullah/Geechee Nation and Kate Derickson, faculty member in Geography, Environment and Society, the panel will include a discussion of the model for effective collaboration and communication, strategies for including students in engaged research, and tools and techniques that have been useful throughout. We will also explore the complex historic relationship between Gullah/Geechee Nation and the University of Minnesota and how that conditions the ethical terrain of collaboration.
Gullah/Geechee Environmental Champion, Queen Quet Becomes a Professor in Department of Geography, Environment and Society

Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation (www.QueenQuet.com) celebrated her 20th year as the Head-of-State for the Gullah/Geechee Nation in July 2020. As of August, she became a professor in the Department of Geography, Environment, and Society at the University of Minnesota. Queen Quet is the Winton Chair at UMN and is engaging graduate students in an interdisciplinary course on Gullah/Geechee culture entitled, “WEBE Gullah/Geechee.”

With the by-line, “Engage to change.” the CREATE Initiative advances research and education at the intersection of water and equity through community engagement, interdisciplinary scholarship, and graduate training.
Save the Sea Islands Tour Takes Queen Quet to the Midwest

Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation (www.QueenQuet.com) will continue the “Save the Sea Islands Tour” in the midwest in April. There are numerous public events in Minnesota that are being sponsored by the University of Minnesota’s Winston Committee. Cum fa jayn we and bring hunnuh famlee!
Gullah/Geechee Nation Leaders Fight for Environmental Equity

Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation (www.QueenQuet.com) is continuing the “Gullah/Geechee Land & Legacy World Tour” in the Great Plains and the Great Lakes region. On this leg of the tour, the focus is environmental equity. At many locations of the tour, members of the Gullah/Geechee histo-musical presentation troupe, De Gullah Cunneckshun join Queen Quet. However, this month, Gullah/Geechee Nation Minister of Information and Protocol Elder Carlie Towne and Representative Glenda Simmons-Jenkins will be on the journey.
