Gullah/Geechee ENERGY Day

The Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition’s Gullah/Geechee ENERGY Project is an intergenerational capacity building project to raise community awareness about the definition and value of renewable energy sources. It is part of the Gullah/Geechee Sustainability Plan United Nations Sustainable Development Goals work that focuses on ending energy poverty. This first Gullah/Geechee ENERGY Day will bring to the community a wide range of information on how to reduce their energy bills, renewable energy options and careers in the energy field.

Gullahs of Achievement A Celebration of Black History

The landmark St. Helena Branch Library will host its annual free Black History Month celebration on Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at 6 pm.  Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation (www.QueenQuet.com) and Founder of the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition will provide the keynote address for the program themed “Gullahs of Achievement.”  Queen Quet will focus on the legacy of Gullah/Geechee native Robert S. Abbott who founded “The Defender” newspaper and how his publication altered the history of tens of thousands of people of African descent during the era that is now referred to as “The Great Migration.”

Celebrate the Gullah/Geechee Living Legacy on Historic St. Helena Island, SC at the Gullah/Geechee Nation International Music & Movement Festival

“Fa We Ancestas” is the theme of the 2017 “Gullah/Geechee Nation International Music & Movement Festival™.”  This festival began on historic St. Helena Island, SC in the Gullah/Geechee Nation in 2005 and has since traveled to numerous cities of the Gullah/Geechee Nation as well as to the Bahamas.   This year’s return to St. Helena Island will be a celebration of the rich living culture of the island and Beaufort County.

The three day celebration August 4-6, 2017 will educate the supporters through a series of cultural heritage activities.

Queen Quet & De Gullah/Geechee Nation Standing Strong fa We Ancestas

Queen Quet has been the elected head-of-state and Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation (www.QueenQuet.com) for 17 years as of July 2, 2017.  She has been standing up for the rights of Gullah/Geechee people for over three decades.  Whenever asked about this, she will let you know that she stands due to her faith and the strength of her ancestors.  Thus, she has effectively led a number of endeavors that have led to global recognition of Gullah/Geechee cultural heritage.   The annual event that she co-founded to celebrate this rich heritage while also supporting the businesses and institutions of the Gullah/Geechee Nation is the “Gullah/Geechee Nation International Music & Movement Festival™” which will be held on her home island-historic St. Helena Island, SC in the Gullah/Geechee Nation August 4-6, 2017.

Beaufort County Bookmobile is Ready to Roll So More Folks Will Read!

Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation (www.QueenQuet.com) is a Friend of Beaufort County Libraries. She is proud to see the return of the bookmobile to St. Helena Island! The community will have an opportunity to “Meet the Bookmobile” at library branches before beginning its summer route on Monday, June 5. Check it out at the following locations:

Gullah/Geechee Nation Celebrates Bike Month!

May is “National Bike Month” and the Gullah/Geechee Nation is joining in the celebration! Not only are the leaders of the Gullah/Geechee Nation encouraging people to participate in “National Bike to Work Week” May 15-19, 2017, they are encouraging Gullah/Geechee and Black bike riders to cycle and cruise down to the St. Helena Community Market in the Dr. Martin L. King Memorial Park on historic St. Helena Island, SC in the Gullah/Geechee Nation on Saturday, May 20 between 10 am and 3 pm for “Gullah/Geechee Bike & Beauty.”
