Gullah/Geechees Defeat Bay Point Destructioneer!

“The decision to uphold the Beaufort Board of Zoning Appeals’ original decision to deny the building of an exclusive luxury resort on Bay Point is an outstanding way to conclude not only Oceans Month, but to also conclude a month that has been filled with celebrations of freedom for us in the Gullah/Geechee Nation,” said Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation. “We have continued to fight for our sacred ancestral lands and the waters that surround us because these are the places that have allowed our families to be self-sufficient for generations and we want these places to remain safe and healthy for future generations to do the same.”
Digging Out the Community: Sand Mining in South Carolina

Sand mining has become a major issue on many of the Sea Islands in the Gullah/Geechee Nation and in mainland communities of South Carolina. In order to further educate the public at this topic and the current battle to stop mining from taking place in Daufuskie Island, SC in the Gullah/Geechee Nation, the South Carolina Coastal Conservation League is hosting a panel discussion on Thursday, December 10, 2020 at 11:30 am.

Public Concern Focuses on Bay Point @GullahGeechee

St. Helena OPPOSES Bay Point “Six Senses” Resort Destructionment

Gullah/Geechee people have been displaced by resort destructionment time and time again and they are now having to deal with increased erosion and climate change impacts due to these types of places. Bay Point is critical to the ecological balance of the Sea Islands including St. Helena Island. Tune in to hear how the community stood up in OPPOSITION to this proposal. St. Helena Island, SC native Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation (www.QueenQuet.com) celebrated the 17th anniversary of being the first Gullah/Geechee to ever speak before the United Nations in Genevé, Switzerland on behalf of Gullah/Geechees by continuing to work to keep the culture alive. She and the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition (www.gullahgeechee.net) which she founded in 1996 in order to insure that Gullah/Geechee traditions and landownership would continue celebrated the conclusion of another successful “Gullah/Geechee Nation Volunteer Month” and invites the community to the landmark St. Helena Branch Library to events for healing the community and continue Gullah/Geechee culture.
