Gullah/Geechee Famlee Day Celebrates Gullah/Geechee Land & Living Legacy

Nation Appreciation Week which is happening July 31st-August 8, 2021. The celebration is happening under the theme “Celebrating Gullah/Geechee Land & Living Legacy” and will begin on historic St. Helena Island, SC on Saturday, July 31, 2021 at Noon at the Dr. Martin Luther King Memorial Park on Sea Island Parkway at Dr. Martin Luther King Drive with “Gullah/Geechee Famlee Day.”
Celebrating the Earth and History in the Gullah/Geechee Nation for #NationalParkWeek

Funds don’t automatically get allocated to the NPS sites nor is it guaranteed that each site will get the full budget that it needs. It takes the support of the community to insure that the tax dollars are directed to these spaces and not cut from federal budgets. Attendance is a major factor in the reporting that part staff does when seeking financial support to sustain national parks.

As much as I am celebrating National Park Week April 21st through 28th along with the National Park Foundation, the official charity of America’s national parks, by traveling to national parks in the midwest and Great Plains, I am truly looking forward to people traveling to my home county to celebrate our national monument the first weekend of June when we host the “Realities of Reconstruction Conference.” National Park Week is dubbed “as a time to explore amazing places, discover stories of history and culture.” The Reconstruction Era National Monument and our conference that will explore the sites within it will allow the participants to celebrate the historic legacy and culture of the Gullah/Geechee Nation.

These conferences are wonderful opportunities to engage in interactive activities and dialogues with people that live the Gullah/Geechee culture and learn first hand how they continue to keep their cultural heritage alive. You can also learn how you can be an active part of assisting in that process. The Gullah/Geechees encourage hunnuh fa jayn we fa yeddi who webe frum we!
Reconstruction Era National Monument Request Public Input

Beaufort County, SC is the location of the new multi-site Reconstruction Era National Monument. The US National Park Service is currently putting together their foundation document which will direct how they will manage and interpret the site. To that end, they have held several public meetings throughout the county and are seeking public comments, please go to https://parkplanning.nps.gov/document.cfm?parkID=571&projectID=73762&documentID=81456 before August 18, 2018 to add your words to this critical part of the process.
