A Cultural Eclipse: Remembering the Slave Trade and Abolition by Queen Quet

Today marks the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition which has been recognized across the world since 1997 and becomes that much more significant during this International Decade of People of African Descent.  As I paused to join with others around the world to remember our African ancestors that were kidnapped and enslaved as well as those African and Gullah/Geechee ancestors that fought back on the coast of the Motherland and the coast of what is now the Gullah/Geechee Nation, I was drawn into a reflection of how this week began…

Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition Celebrates 20 Years with #GullahGeechee2020!

To celebrate 20 years at the premiere advocacy organization for Gullah/Geechee people worldwide, the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition will host twenty different events as a part of #GullahGeechee2020. These events will also be part of their continued celebration and commemoration of the International Decade of People of African Descent.

Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition 19 Years Strong!

Queen Quet was given a statement by the ancestors in a vision and this became the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition’s motto which has been incorrectly published as a “Gullah proverb” by many that did not cite Queen Quet for the origin of the quote:

“Hunnuh mus tek cyare de root fa heal de tree.”

However, she has lived these words as she’s worked on behalf of the Gullah/Geechee community for over thirty five years and she continues to stand and lead the efforts to keep Gullah/Geechee culture alive and heal the community from the hostility and misrepresentation that they have endured.
