Black Music Month and Gullah/Geechee Sounds
June is “Black Music Month” which gives Gullah/Geechees a specific time to celebrate what they already love to make-music. The Spirituals are the official music of the Gullah/Geechee Nation and the state of South Carolina due to the fact that they were created by native Gullah/Geechees on plantations of the Sea Islands. Not only have these Spiritual sounds been exported from the Gullah/Geechee Nation’s coast and disbursed around the world, numerous genres of music owe their beginnings to being birthed out of those that grew up in the church and sang the Spirituals.
Celebrate the Gullah/Geechee Living Legacy on Historic St. Helena Island, SC at the Gullah/Geechee Nation International Music & Movement Festival
“Fa We Ancestas” is the theme of the 2017 “Gullah/Geechee Nation International Music & Movement Festival™.” This festival began on historic St. Helena Island, SC in the Gullah/Geechee Nation in 2005 and has since traveled to numerous cities of the Gullah/Geechee Nation as well as to the Bahamas. This year’s return to St. Helena Island will be a celebration of the rich living culture of the island and Beaufort County.
The three day celebration August 4-6, 2017 will educate the supporters through a series of cultural heritage activities.
Gullah/Geechee Nation’s Black Music Month on Historic St. Helena Island Launches with the Sea Island Sounds Celebration
June is “Black Music Month.” This annual celebration in the Gullah/Geechee Nation will begin at the St. Helena Island Community Market with the “Sea Island Sounds Celebration” on Saturday, June 3, 2017 featuring songstresses, Mahoganee and GwenYvette. Both of these dynamic singers will be releasing new songs and the audience at the celebration will be the first to hear them at the Dr. Martin Luther King Park on historic St. Helena Island on that day. The event begins at 10 am and ends at 3 pm.

Congratulations goes out to St. Helena Island’s Gullah/Geechee songstress, GwenYvette. She has just received the SC Female Artist of the Year Award!
A Celebration of Self-Determination in the Gullah/Geechee Nation!
The 11th Annual “Gullah/Geechee Nation International Music & Movement Festival™” (www.gullahgeechee.info) is themed “A Celebration of Self-Determination.” This culminating weekend of activities for “Gullah/Geechee Nation Appreciation Week” will be held at various venues in the Charleston County area August 5-7, 2016.
