Gullah/Geechee Environmental Champion, Queen Quet Becomes a Professor in Department of Geography, Environment and Society
Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation (www.QueenQuet.com) celebrated her 20th year as the Head-of-State for the Gullah/Geechee Nation in July 2020. As of August, she became a professor in the Department of Geography, Environment, and Society at the University of Minnesota. Queen Quet is the Winton Chair at UMN and is engaging graduate students in an interdisciplinary course on Gullah/Geechee culture entitled, “WEBE Gullah/Geechee.”

Many of these individuals have also decided that the best way to support the BIPOC communities is via financial support so that the economic wealth gap can be closed and the BIPOC communities and families therein can be sustained. Fortunately, a number of organizations and individuals have stepped up to join and support the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition in the efforts that it has led for over two decades.

While the Gullah/Geechee Diaspora is broad, the Gullah/Geechee Nation is the political, cultural and spiritual home of the Gullah/Geechees today–and it faces an uncertain future due to overdevelopment, sea level rise, and worsening storms.
Queen Quet Marquetta L. Goodwine is Chieftess and Head of State for the Gullah/Geechee Nation and the Founder of the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition. She has been working to keep Gullah/Geechee culture, language, and traditions alive while also fighting for human rights and self-determination for her people.

A World Oceans Month 2020 Reflection on the Flow of Justice
The more that people tune their spirits into this global moment of truth that we are in, they can come together in their cultural communities and be empowered. This power will then strike the shorelines around the globe well beyond World Oceans Month and maybe we can all breathe it in then pause and give thanks for the water bringing us all back into balance and healing us as Mother Earth heals herself. While she does, I pray that justice continues to flow.
