Earth Day Activities @GullahGeechee
Many citizens of the Gullah/Geechee Nation have engaged in Earth Month by continuing the agrarian traditions that their ancestors passed down. Many others have started to engage in citizens science projects and academic field work that will help build capacity in regard to resilience and sustainability not only for the land and water, but also for our cultural heritage community. If haven’t yet participated in the events that were held virtually, join in these Earth Day activities with the Gullah/Geechee Family.

Join us for the Human Element Film Screening and Discussion as South Carolina leaders from the faith, political and education sectors and Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation come together to evaluate our relationship with the natural world and to determine how South Carolina can work to restore balance.
Afro-Atlantic Legacies Gullah/Geechee Movie Screening and Discussion
Tune in to this special Black History Month screening and discussion of the documentary, Memorias Afro-Atlanticas which follows the footsteps of the father of Gullah/Geechee linguistics, Dr. Lorenzo Dow Turner from the Gullah/Geechee Nation to Brazil. The documentary centers on the continuation of the Afro-spiritual practice of Candomblé . Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation (www.QueenQuet.com) is featured in the film and will host the screening and discussion with the filmmakers that made this historic reconnection of the African Diaspora take place. Gullah/Geechee TV & Movie Club Launches with “Reconstruction: The Second Civil War”
The “Gullah/Geechee TV & Movie Club” will begin on Thursday, March 23rd at 6 pm with Part 1 of the documentary, “Reconstruction: The Second Civil War.” Part 2 will be shown on April 27th. Both parts will be introduced by Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation (www.QueenQuet.com) who appeared in and consulted for the documentary which aired on PBS when it was first released.
Wilmington on Fire Has SC Premiere on St. Helena Island
A massacre kept secret for over 100 years. Now the truth will finally be revealed in this outstanding film that has been playing to sold out houses throughout North Carolina. The Wilmington Massacre was a bloody attack on the African-American community by a heavily armed white mob with the support of the North Carolina Democratic Party on November 10, 1898 in the port city of Wilmington, North Carolina. It is considered one of the only successful examples of a coup d’état in the United States that left countless numbers of African-American citizens dead and exiled from the city. This event was the spring board for the white supremacy movement and Jim Crow segregation throughout the state of North Carolina and the American South.
