Gullah/Geechee Rise Up for Climate, Jobs and Justice!

Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation (www.QueenQuet.com) has been on the “Gullah/Geechee Save the Sea Islands World Tour” with various stops this year.  One of those stops included standing strong on the South Carolina State House steps with the other members of the Gullah/Geechee Fishing Association against oil drilling and exploration in the Atlantic Ocean.

Gullah/Geechee Stand Up to #StoptheDrill and #ProtectOurCoastQueen Quet continues to stand with partners throughout South Carolina on that issue and to find clean renewable energy resources for not only her home state, but to work with global partners for a more sustainable environment in accordance with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Climate Agreement.  As a result, she has been asked to take part in the Global Climate Action Summit and several other United Nations discussions.  However, before she flies out, she will again stand up on the grounds of the South Carolina State Capitol.

Rise 4 Climate Jobs & Justice

On Saturday, September 8, 2018 from 9 am to Noon, the People’s Climate March takes its stand in South Carolina.  Rise for Climate, Jobs, and Justice is a Global Day of Action.  The event in Columbia is being sponsored by Organizing For Action (OFA.us) which is a partner with Sierra Club, 350.org and many other organizations. This rally throughout the nation and world is building a movement as we move toward the Global Climate Summit in San Francisco, September 12–14.

The goals of the Rise for Climate, Jobs and Justice Rally on Sept 8th is to inspire and educate attendees and the larger community and bring more awareness and greater activism in order to address the threats and reality of climate change on not only vulnerable populations, but on everyone. The lens of the rally is focused on justice.

Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation, Chuck Rhodes, Virginia Sanders and others from partner organizations will be the speakers for the day! Musicians include Kevin McKinney, The Dubber, Wombat Junction and The Disquiet.    Stephanie Palmer-Smith will host a craft table for younger people.

OFA Central Midlands is partnering with Sierra Club, Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition, the local 350 Columbia chapter, Carolina Peace, Oceana, Simple Justice Black Lives Matter, Sustainable MidlandsSkepticalScience.com, SC Interfaith Power and Light, and Friends of the Earth and working with other local organizations and individuals to have a very successful non-partisan event.  To learn more, volunteer or RSVP for the rally go to https://actionnetwork.org/events/rise-up-for-climate-jobs-and-justice
