Florida Celebrates #GullahGeechee Nation Appreciation Week 2018
Nassau County and the City of Fernandina Beach, Florida both proclaimed “Gullah/Geechee Nation Appreciation Week 2018.” For the first time in history, the celebration was launched on Amelia Island at historic American Beach. Gullah/Geechee Famlee Day at American Beach was a huge success on an extremely sunny day which followed a stormy night with massive rains and flooding. The only flooding on the launch day was the love being shared by the Gullah/Geechees from the Carolinas and Georgia that came to reunite with their rest of their people in Florida.
One of the interesting highlights for the overall celebration this year was the proclamation presentation done by Mayor Johnny Miller who has worked with Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation (www.QueenQuet.com) on numerous successful endeavors to prevent oil drilling and seismic gun testing on the Gullah/Geechee coast. They were recognized as Ocean Heroes in Washington, DC some years back due to their efforts. They are currently continuing to focus on these issues in addition to sea level rise, adaptation, and resilience efforts due to the climate change impacts in their region.
Mayor Miller is not only an environmental activist, but a bartender. Queen Quet was invited to the Palace to receive the City of Fernandina’s proclamation. That palace turned out to be the oldest saloon in Florida! Take a look at the coverage from Gullah/Geechee TV:
