Gullah/Geechee Ancestral Voices Speak to Protect St. Helena Island from Destructionment

For three years running, the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition, our attorneys from the South Carolina Environmental Law Center, the Coastal Conservation League, Penn Center and a cadre of additional partners have continued to stand up to Protect St. Helena Island. This year, two of our fighters that understood that we are warring against spiritual wickedness in high and low places crossed over in the realm of the ancestors. The first one that made his crossing was Rev. Kenneth Hodges of the “Gullah/Geechee Visitors Center” who pastored Tabernacle Baptist Church in Beaufort, SC where we unveiled the Harriet Tubman Monument. We stood together many times on each of these things and in each of these places. His words live on as he speaks from the grave concerning the St. Helena Island Cultural Protection Overlay District…

Celebrate 25 Years of Gullah/Geechee Self-Determination at Gullah/Geechee Famlee Day!

The Gullah/Geechee Nation and its elected Head-of-State and Chieftess, Queen Quet, will celebrate a historic milestone: the 25th Anniversary of the founding of the Gullah/Geechee Nation. To mark this momentous occasion, the public is “culturally” invited to attend Gullah/Geechee Famlee Day on Saturday, July 26, 2025, from Noon to 3 PM at the iconic Penn Center, Inc. on historic St. Helena Island, South Carolina, within the heart of the Gullah/Geechee Nation.

Gullah/Geechee Queen’s Chronicle: Stay een de Field

I touched my ancestors hands as I touched the same field that they toiled in and fought for. I felt the heat on my face and knew that they were smiling as I paid homage to them for their vision and strength to ensure that their generations of descendants would have land to keep their families safe on and to thrive on. In memorial to them, I did as the song and “stayed een de field.”

The Gullah/Geechee Nation has been celebrating its 25th Anniversary since February. This is also the 25th Anniversary of Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation. Therefore, activities have been held in all four states already and the journey from Jacksonville to Jacksonville continues over the coming months. Queen Quet is calling for all the Gullah/Geechee Nation’s citizens and global supporters to come out and be a part of the fun and authentic cultural enrichment!
