Queen Quet of de Gullah/Geechee Receives Community Star Award from EPA and DHEC
Director Daniel Blackman of United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s Region joined South Carolina Department of Environmental Health and Control (DHEC) Director Myra Reece on historic St. Helena Island, SC in the Gullah/Geechee Nation to present Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation (www.QueenQuet.com) with the “Community Star Award.” DHEC’s Community Star Award recognizes a business, community organization, collaborative partnership, or individual that goes above and beyond environmental requirements in order to build better community relationships, promote environmental sustainability and resiliency, and/or improve quality of life for communities.
Gullah/Geechee: Living Resilience and Cultural Sustainability
Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation (www.QueenQuet.com) returned to the University of Florida as one of the stops on the “Healin’ de Land World Tour.” She was afforded the honor to be a “Dean’s Scholar” and she provided the keynote address, “Gullah/Geechee: Living Resilience and Cultural Sustainability.” Tune een fa yeddi disya frum Gullah/Geechee TV (GGTV).

De Gullah/Geechee and National Public Health Week
The Gullah/Geechee Sustainability Think Tank has been blessed to be able to convene a cadre of doctors that have been working within the Sea Islands of the Gullah/Geechee Nation on numerous environmental and human health studies. The outcomes of these studies and how the Gullah/Geechee population can be an active part of healing processes has become central to our interactions and our discussions. So, I felt blessed and impressed to emerge from another enlightening engagement with several of our MUSC community outreach partners to see a banner that indicated that it was “National Public Health Week.”
