Celebrating Barbados & De Gullah/Geechee Nation
Many 2020 celebrations were disrupted due to the coronavirus pandemic. Amongst these were numerous return home to Africa celebrations and the 350th of Charleston, SC. These were scheduled to overlap with the 300th celebration in Barbados and the 20th Anniversary of the Gullah/Geechee Nation.
As we have often had to do, the children of Mother Africa adapted quickly to the new circumstances that we were faced with. So, we took our celebrations to the global audiences that could not come to visit us. As a result, thousands of additional people have been able to partake of insights about the African Diaspora that they may not have been able to do so if traveling was required. Two such online engagements that linked people directly to celebrations that are held annually in the Gullah/Geechee Nation were the Carifest Virtual Summit and the Take a Stand fa Gullah/Geechee Land! #GullahGeechee2020 Telethon.
Queen Quet of the Gullah/Geechee Fighting to Keep Alive a Cultural and an Ecological Family
While the Gullah/Geechee Diaspora is broad, the Gullah/Geechee Nation is the political, cultural and spiritual home of the Gullah/Geechees today–and it faces an uncertain future due to overdevelopment, sea level rise, and worsening storms.
Queen Quet Marquetta L. Goodwine is Chieftess and Head of State for the Gullah/Geechee Nation and the Founder of the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition. She has been working to keep Gullah/Geechee culture, language, and traditions alive while also fighting for human rights and self-determination for her people.

A 40 Year Stand for Gullah/Geechee Land
If our ancestors had this much belief in the intelligence among our people back in 1865 to maintain their freedom, I will not give up on believing that we still have it now! The Gullah/Geechee Nation came into existence because there were those amongst us that wanted to maintain our freedom and continue our culture on our land. Webe self-determined Gullah/Geechee!
Gullah/Geechee Nation Celebrates #GullahGeechee2020 Honoring Queen Quet’s 20 Year Legacy
Queen Quet (www.QueenQuet.com) has spent four decades of her life fighting to prevent the genocide of her people and insuring that Gullah/Geechee culture will not only continue to exist, but that it will also be represented accurately and respectfully. She has successfully won many land rights cases and gotten laws changed in favor of the Gullah/Geechee people. She has repeatedly returned to the United Nations and continues to serve on international boards working to insure the continued sustainability of the environment of and the cultural heritage within the Gullah/Geechee Nation from Jacksonville, NC to Jacksonville, FL.

Ending the Plantation, Mascotification, and Exploitation in the Gullah/Geechee Nation
Over the past two decades since the Gullah/Geechee people came together to stand on their human right to self-determination, leaders of the Gullah/Geechee Nation have stood up against the on-slaught of mechanisms designed to displace them from the Sea Islands and to degrade their culture. Being vocal about the displacement caused by and the use of the word “plantation” on gated areas has caused many of the leaders of the Gullah/Geechee Nation to be shunned and to even be targeted with threats. Yet, they have continued to speak out clearly against the denigrating effect of seeing the word “plantation” on gated areas, especially on Hilton Head Island, SC. Also, by the 20th Anniversary of the Gullah/Geechee Nation, the mascotification and economic exploitation by Revelry Brewing Company and Gullah Gourmet in Charleston, SC has to come to an end!
Rising Seas, Risings Temperatures and Rising Movement on the Sea Islands
The Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition and the Gullah/Geechee Sustainability Think Tank has remained focused on accomplishing the United Nations Sustainability Development Goals (UN SDGs) and continues to work with global partners to raise awareness via climate science in order to reverse the negative impacts of climate change on the Sea Islands of the Gullah/Geechee Nation. The risings seas and rising temperatures that are being witnessed have consistently been documented while the world’s scientists seek the answers to what human behaviors can be altered in order to bring these things back into alignment and cause the environment to be balanced and the earth to be healed.
