De Drum Soundin fa #GullahGeechee Nation Appreciation Week!

As Black Music Month came to an end, the sounds of the drum could still be heard throughout the Gullah/Geechee Nation from Jacksonville, NC to Jacksonville, FL. The drums are sounding in celebration as county and town councils from North Carolina to Florida are proclaiming “Gullah/Geechee Nation Appreciation Week” from July 30-August 7, 2016. The theme for the celebration is “A Celebration of Self-Determination.”

My spirit gets dehydrated at times no matter where I am and the ocean or at least a body of water seems to call me to it. When I get to the water, the dehydration is quenched. This week is a critical time for carefully going to the water since June 8th is World Oceans Day, this is Rip Current Awareness Week, and this is US Fishing Week.
Beaufort Humanities Festival Highlights @GullahGeechee Culture

Founder of the St. Helena Island based, Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition, Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation (www.QueenQuet.com) will provide a special Gullah/Geechee history of St. Helena tour through the landmark St. Helena Branch Library during the Beaufort Humanities Festival. Tours will take place on Friday, June 10th between Noon and 2 pm and are FREE for all attendees.
