Queen Quet of the Gullah/Geechee Nation Receives the Order of the Palmetto

Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation (www.QueenQuet.com) is a native of St. Helena Island, SC and the first person from her island to receive the prestigious “Order of the Palmetto.”   South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster presented Queen Quet with the State of South Carolina’s highest civilian honor presented in recognition of a lifetime of extraordinary achievement, service and contributions on a national or statewide scale. Queen Quet has received approximately 300 awards and honors over the years and sees this one as not only for her, but for the entire Gullah/Geechee Nation especially for her ancestors that built South Carolina through their knowledge and skills. “Disya award sweet as a Gullah/Geechee Palmetto rose!,” she says.

Queen Quet @GullahGeechee Wins Adaptation Leadership Award!

Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation (www.QueenQuet.com) was honored at the American Society of Adaptation Professionals (ASAP) Awards. She was presented with the Regional Adaptation Leadership Award for the Carolinas. The American Society of Adaptation Professionals (ASAP) Regional Adaptation Leadership Award (RALA) recognizes individuals who have distinguished themselves in the climate change adaptation field through exceptional leadership.

Gullah/Geechee Environmental Champion, Queen Quet Becomes a Professor in Department of Geography, Environment and Society

Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation (www.QueenQuet.com) celebrated her 20th year as the Head-of-State for the Gullah/Geechee Nation in July 2020. As of August, she became a professor in the Department of Geography, Environment, and Society at the University of Minnesota. Queen Quet is the Winton Chair at UMN and is engaging graduate students in an interdisciplinary course on Gullah/Geechee culture entitled, “WEBE Gullah/Geechee.”

Queen Quet of the Gullah/Geechee Nation Receives Community Service Award from South Carolina Coalition for Voter Participation

Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation (www.QueenQuet.com) was honored by the South Carolina Coalition for Voter Participation at a banquet in Charleston, SC in the Gullah/Geechee Nation.   Queen Quet was chosen to receive the Rev. Dr. BJ Whipper Sr. Award which recognizes an individual for his or her unselfish community work and her spiritual, economic, and political contributions to her home state.
