The official theme for Black History Month 2026 is “A Century of Black History Commemorations.”
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the first organized celebration of Black history, which began with Negro History Week established by Dr. Carter G. Woodson in 1926 and later evolved into Black History Month. The theme encourages reflection on the century-long efforts to honor, preserve, and teach Black history and culture, highlighting how these commemorations have shaped identity, education, community, and broader understandings of American history. In the Gullah/Geechee Nation, celebrating sustained identity and land ownership happens 365 days of the year. So, the Gullah/Geechee Nation is actively engaged in Black History Month celebrations and will host numerous events throughout the coast. Cum fa jayn we!
