Celebrating #BlackHistory365 @GullahGeechee

Every year the Gullah/Geechee Nation celebrates “Black History Month” via a number of events.  However, the continuation of Gullah/Geechee cultural heritage goes on 365-366 days per year.  So, the celebration of ourstory which is a living legacy of Black history continues daily.   We wan hunnuh chillun fa cum fa jayn we!

The Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition and the Gullah/Geechee Angel Network sponsor a number of events annually.  Many of the events are FREE.  However, all of the events have limited space.  So, please make sure to obtain passes and/or register now.  The conferences are all discounted for “Black History Month” as part of “Early Bird Registration.”  If you become a Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition member by paying dues for the year, you will be able to take full advantage of the cheapest rates for all events and to receive invitations to the members only activities that take place annually.   If you are already a member, Tenki Tenki!

• You can start off Black History Month celebrating the one year anniversary of Gullah Roots in North Charleston, SC by going out to Customer Appreciation Night on February 2nd:

• On February 3rd, learn about the Gullah/Geechee ancestors buried in Charleston and begin researching your genealogy at a joint event of the Gullah Society and the International African American Museum (IAAM) https://www.facebook.com/events/1437321496376518/
If you are in the Hampton, SC area, stop into the Black History Month program at the “Old Colored School Museum” https://www.facebook.com/events/409692726129051/
• February 4th take a journey from there to Hilton Head for praise and history at First African Baptist Church https://www.facebook.com/events/481553268906114/
• On February 10th, continue the journey through the freedom story of Mitchelville by returning there for “The Freedom Experience at Mitchelville”  at St. James Baptist Church

• February 13 6 pm Segregation, Education and Self-determination: Septima Clark, Charlotte Forten Grimké, and Robert Smalls at the University of South Carolina Beaufort Campus Center

 

• February 24 join the Gullah Society’s Community Conversation about Gullah/Geechee ancestors and burial grounds at McLeod Plantation on James Island
