This water passageway came to be due to the crime against humanity called the “TransAtlantic Slave Trade.” Over the years, there have been a number of ceremonies done to honor the souls of those that went into the passage and those that survived it. Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation will lead the libation ceremony in Old Town Fernandina on Saturday, September 28, 2013 at 3 pm. Representative Glenda Simmons-Jenkins and Peck Ensemble will also present during the ceremony which is part of the “Middle Passage Ceremonies and Port Markers Project.”
