Celebrating World Oceans and Environment Days @GullahGeechee: Reflecting Upon the Sea

I breathed in with the power of my ancestors who had no one protest the abuses that they suffered as they worked this land. I looked out over the water back toward the Motherland and I thought of how the ocean continues to link us back there and to others around the world. I paused and wondered how we’ll celebrate together “Innovation for a Sustainable Ocean” in the midst of all the other things going on. I thought of how we can simply find a way to sustain Gullah/Geechee life in an environment that seeks to stop Black folks from breathing at all much less breathing in the healing air of a clean environment.

Happy Anniversary to the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition! Celebrating Environmental Victories!

The Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition (www.GullahGeechee.net) was the first organization in world history to contain “Gullah/Geechee” in its name.  Since they started their work in 1996 under the leadership of the founder, Queen Quet Marquetta L. Goodwine (www.QueenQuet.com), they have successfully managed to get “Gullah/Geechee” as one unit into the vocabulary of the world instead of the use of “Gullah” or “Geechee” separately.   This is part of one of the many seeds that Queen Quet who coined the phrase

“Hunnuh mus tek cyare de root fa heal de tree.”
has planted around the world as she continues to lead the fight for Gullah/Geechee land and human rights.

Queen’s Chronicle: Healin #GullahGeechee Land & Holdin pun de Culcha

Holdin pun de culcha happens pun de land. If we are taking a stand for land in order to keep Gullah/Geechee cultural heritage alive on it, it requires a significant intellectual, spiritual, and financial investment. So, as much as “Gullah/Geechee Famlee Day” is a fun raiser it is also a fundraiser. We call on all those celebrating “Gullah/Geechee Nation Appreciation Week” that truly appreciate the work that is on-going that allows us to still live on our coast and to keep our culture alive here to contribute to the “Gullah/Geechee Land & Legacy Fund”

#StopTheDrill @GullahGeechee

Please take the time today to write a letter or online comment expressing that you do NOT want any seismic guns used nor any oil exploration and drilling to be done in the Atlantic Ocean due to the fact that this would cause irreparable harm to the homeland and waterways of Gullah/Geechee people.  This will have negative impacts on the Gullah/Geechee fisheries as well as the quality of life on the Sea Islands.  Therefore, you stand in opposition to oil leasing in the Atlantic Ocean.  You can submit the comments and letters here: https://www.boem.gov/National-Program-Comment/  Please cc the letters to the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition at GullGeeCo@aol.com as well.

As I heard the words from the representative from Greeleyville ringing out saying “We want our freedom now!” coupled with the words back to back from the other representatives saying that we are here to send a clear message to Washington, DC, I stood there thinking “South Carolina is firing again and this will be Civil War 3!”
