A tear flowed down my eyes on the historic peninsula called “Charleston” or “Chucktown” that was once called “Charles Town.”
These tears were emitting from my soul for my ancestors as I explained to the mayor of this international city how things must go down.
No one in the room spoke, they all simply looked on and listened to what the ancestors had to say through me
As I told them how my feet burned every time I walked the streets of this city.
Celebrating Black Freedom in the Gullah/Geechee Nation
Gullah/Geechee citizens stood for their human right to self-determination over two decades ago and declared their own nation on the very lands where their ancestors had not only previously been enslaved, but where they fought for their freedom through uprisings including the Stono Rebellion and the Denmark Vesey Rebellion and the US Civil War. The concepts of self-determination and self-sufficiency have been consistent in certain Gullah/Geechee families and communities. This is why Gullah/Geechee culture has been able to continue to exist in spite of all the efforts that have been and continue to be done to water down and ultimately assimilate and eliminate the cultural heritage traditions in what is now the Gullah/Geechee Nation.

Every year the Gullah/Geechee Nation celebrates “Black History Month” via a number of events. However, the continuation of Gullah/Geechee cultural heritage goes on 365-366 days per year. So, the celebration of ourstory which is a living legacy of Black history continues daily. We wan hunnuh chillun fa cum fa jayn we!
International African American Museum Supported by Blackbaud!
“We’re investing in International African American Museum (@IAAMuseum) because we believe all people deserve the opportunity to know their heritage.” Stated Mike Gianoni of Blackbaud as they donated $1 Million to the International African American Museum (IAAM) which is to be built at Gasden’s Wharf along the Charleston Harbor.
The site of the coming museum is also the location of the Gullah/Geechee Nation International Music & Movement Festival™’s “Gullah/Geechee Reunion Day” each time that the festival takes place in Charleston, SC.
