Gullah/Geechee Famlee Day Celebrates Gullah/Geechee Land & Living Legacy

The Gullah/Geechee Nation is celebrating its 21st anniversary with a series of events for Gullah/Geechee Nation Appreciation Week which is happening July 31st-August 8, 2021.   The celebration is happening under the theme “Celebrating Gullah/Geechee Land & Living Legacy” and will begin on historic St. Helena Island, SC on Saturday, July 31, 2021 at Noon at the Dr. Martin Luther King Memorial Park on Sea Island Parkway at Dr. Martin Luther King Drive with “Gullah/Geechee Famlee Day.”

Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation (www.QueenQuet.com) who is celebrating 21 years as the Queen Mother and Head pun de Podee for the Gullah/Geechee Nation hosts “Gullah/Geechee Famlee Day” annually.  This is the first time this event that brings together hundreds of native Gullah/Geechees is being held on historic St. Helena Island in Beaufort County, SC which has also been designated the location for the multi-site Reconstruction Era National Park.  The previous event held at Mosquito Beach brought out over 1,000 native Gullah/Geechees the way that location used to bring out people during its heyday.  The Gullah/Geechees of St. Helena Island are looking forward to matching that number of attendees on July 31st in the way that their 4th of July celebrations on “The Green” (as this park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places) always brought out everyone with their entire families.

Numerous Gullah/Geechee artists and food trucks will be present for the event which is being sponsored by the Gullah/Geechee Nation and All Mobile Productions™ (AMP™).  The Gullah/Geechee Visitors Center will be open and the Gullah/Geechee Chamber of Commerce will be supporting the event for the first time.   

Due to the fact that this event is one of the many activities for the “Saving Gullah/Geechee Land Caravan” which is being led by the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition, attendees are not being charged an admission, but are asked to make donations to the “Gullah/Geechee Land & Legacy Fund” via CashApp $GullahGeecheeNation or via GoFundMe https://www.gofundme.com/f/gullahgeechee-land-amp-legacy-fund .  Many people that are not able to make it to “Gullah/Geechee Famlee Day” have already made donations via one of these methods of directly at the site for passes for the day: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/157357244755. Everyone is encouraged to download passes ahead of attending.

Although social distancing and wearing masks when close up at booths will be enforced in order to insure the safety of all attendees, the Gullah/Geechee Famlee is looking forward to being back together and to dancing to an outstanding R & B mix by DJ Kwame Sha.  There will also be activities for children.  Attendees are encouraged to bring cash, CashApp, chairs, masks, drums and tambourines as well as dancing shoes and lots of positive energy!
