Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Awareness Month Launches with Queen Quet Gullah/Geechee Legacy Library Ribbon Cutting


The founders of Black History Month, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) will host their annual conference in North Charleston, SC during the beginning of October to coincide with the Moja Arts Festival.  ASALH honored Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation (http://www.QueenQuet.com) as a “Living Legend” during a special luncheon on Capitol Hill.  She will join “Living Legend,” Dr. Najmah Thomas and Elder Carlie Towne and Dr. Jessica Berry for an opening panel at ASALH’s Conference entitled “Historical Impacts of Migration on the Gullah/Geechee Nation.”This panel will be held at 2 pm on October 2nd.


This panel is the pre-opening event for the beginning of “Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Awareness Month.” The official launch celebration will be a Gullah/Geechee Dinner Dance at Scott’s Grand’s Destiny Café in North Charleston, SC.  The evening begins with the ribbon cutting of the “Queen Quet Gullah/Geechee Legacy Library” at 6 pm.   The event is FREE, but an advance registration is required at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/queen-quet-gullahgeechee-legacy-library-ribbon-cutting-and-dinner-dance-tickets-73708162097

Queen Quet will do a book and CD signing that evening and will share from her new novels.     All Mobile Productions™ will provide music.  Ragina Scott Saunders will be hosting the evening at her Pay-What-You-Can Destiny Café.


Given that “Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Awareness Month” coincides with Black History Month in the United Kingdom, Queen Quet will head to Scotland for the “Climate Heritage Mobilization Network Launch.”  She will then continue her “Healin de Land World Tour” by proceeding to Preston England to present at the English Literature & Creative Writing’s ‘In Conversation Series’, on 28 October, 12.30 to 2.30 pm in the Creative Innovation Zone (ME 414), Media Factory 4th Floor, Kirkham Street, PR1 2HE.  Reservations are required at https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/queen-quet-presents-on-the-reality-of-being-gullahgeechee-tickets-73545810499

The culmination of the celebration of the month will be held on Saturday, November 2, 2019 at Geechee Kunda in Riceboro, GA.  A Gullah/Geechee Famlee fundraiser will take place at this museum and cultural history interpretive site on the Georgia Coast.
