Disya bin a bless up month fa we! We bin da drum and dance fa webe free!

Ain cyare whey hunnuh bin da gwine ef hunnuh dey whey webe, hunnuh yeddi dem da drum fa we!

As Black Music Month draws to a close with the preciseness of a perfectly engineered track that fades out because their is still so much energy left during the recording session that all of the rhythms couldn’t continue because the song would never end, I am still hearing the drums. We started off the journey with a celebration of freedom-Juneteenth and continued to sound them from Carolina to Georgia to Florida to the shore of Barbados. We sounded them for Cato so that he would know that they hadn’t gotten all of us to adhere to the 1740 Slave Code. We sounded dem fa Bussa til fiya light pun e so diffy dey ebeeywey! We sounded them to unite the family that had been scattered throughout the African and Gullah/Geechee Diasporas and as we came together we had to dance!

The power and ancestral energy felt in every drum call and every dance this past month was uplifting and uniting from the Gullah/Geechee Nation‘s shores to the hills of Barbados where our Rastafarian bruddren and sistren give praise and thanks. The unity of the global Gullah/Geechee Diasporic Famlee during the numerous drum calls truly embodied the basis for the “international Decade of People of African Descent.” This decade is one in which the upliftment of African people must take place and that only happens when we reconnect in a positive manner and celebrate ourselves. So, my prayer is that the sound of unity continues to resonate for many months and years to come and da hunnuh chillun gwine keep cumin togedda win hunnuh yeddi de drums!
