Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation (www.QueenQuet.com) has been traveling not only through multiple states, but across the globe on the “Healin de Land World Tour.” She completed the UNESCO International Water Conference in Paris, France and will next return to Korea for a UN conference. Between these journeys, she is stopping on her own shoreline of the Gullah/Geechee Nation for the annual “Hands Across the Sands” event.

On Saturday, May 18, a large group of residents and local elected officials will gather on Folly Beach for a demonstration against offshore drilling, as part of the 10^th annual Hands Across the Sand events taking place worldwide. Hands Across the Sand participants will hear from elected officials in a press conference and then join hands in a long line as a figurative way to say “no” to offshore drilling and “yes” to clean, renewable energy. The demonstration will showcase local opposition to Trump’s proposed plan for drilling off the Atlantic coast, which has drawn intense criticism from residents and elected officials.

The press conference will start at 11:30 a.m. and will feature comments on the subject of offshore drilling from Queen Quet of the Gullah/Geechee Nation, Congressman Joe Cunningham, State Senator Chip Campsen, State Rep. J.A Moore, Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg, Charleston City Councilmember Mike Seekings, and Folly Beach Councilmember Laurie Hull.

What: 10^th annual Charleston-area Hands Across the Sand event

When: Saturday, May 18 at 11:30 am

*Surfrider will be hosting a beach clean up which starts at 10am

Where:  Folly Beach; on the beach adjacent to the pier (101 E. Arctic Ave.). Event will be held rain or shine, however in case of heavy rain or thunderstorms, we will gather underneath the roofed portion of the pier. Come early because there is heavy traffic on Folly Beach on Saturdays.
