Celebrating Black Bikers @GullahGeechee!

For decades, Black bikers have rolled out to The Black Pearl-Atlantic Beach, SC in the Gullah/Geechee Nation during Memorial Day Weekend. For the past two years, those that wanted to take a month long road trip along the South Carolina coast have started off the beginning of May on historic St. Helena Island, SC the first Saturday of the month and then could very leisurely tour the coastline for the rest of the weeks in between before getting to the Grand Strand area which Atlantic Beach sits above.

Since May is bike month, the folks in the Gullah/Geechee Nation decided to not only encourage riding bicycles, but to also celebrate bikes that are motorized and to honor the legacy of Black bikers. To that end, on Saturday, May 4, 2019 from 3 to 6 pm, “Gullah/Geechee Bike & Beauty” will take place at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park at the intersection fo Highway 21 / Sea Island Parkway and Dr. Martin Luther King Drive on St. Helena Island. For the first time in the history of this event, there will be a a “Best of Show” (with two categories) and “Best Beauty” contest for the lady riders. Admission is free, but for the contest there is a fee.

Gullah/Geechee food and other items will be on sale. DJ Kwame Sha of All Mobile Productions™ (AMP™) will be on the turntables keeping the groove going throughout the event. The documentary “Black Beach / White Beach” will close out the entire event. It tells the story of the beginning of and consistent battle that Black bikers have had maintaining “Black Biker Week” in Atlantic Beach.

It’s time to rev up and roll out! If you don’t have a bike, it is your duty to bring the beauty! Get your passes here for FREE: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/gullahgeechee-bike-beauty-tickets-54425443968
