Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Awareness Month 2018

The Gullah/Geechee Nation began their celebration of “Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Awareness Month” by celebrating the receipt of the Rev. Dr. BJ Whipper Sr. Community Service Award by Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation (www.QueenQuet.com) and Founder of the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition. The award was presented at a banquet in Charleston, SC on the same Saturday of the Moja Celebration Heritage Day which was the final Saturday in September. The South Carolina Coalition for Voter Participation honored Queen Quet for unselfish community service and her contributions spiritually, economically, and politically.

The citizens of the Gullah/Geechee Nation call for the entire world to celebrate with us on each day of October annually by learning more about the living history of our community and by supporting the business owners, artists, and events of native Gullah/Geechees. • Support the Gullah/Geechee Angel Network‘s annual Moja Festival production in downtown Charleston, SC in the Gullah/Geechee Nation on October 6, 2018 :

• Celebrate wid we October 7, 2018 frum 3 ta 7 pm at de “Gullah/Geechee Gala at Gullah Roots!” This will be one of the closing events for the Moja Festival. Dress to impress and wear your Gullah/Geechee best! Jayn and support de Gullah/Geechee Famlee!

• Learn more about your roots at the October 6 a FREE Gullah/Geechee Genealogy Workshop which will be held at the St. Helena Branch Library as a collaboration with the International African American Museum (IAAM)

• October 10 at 5:30 pm join the Concerned Citizens of St. Helena Island and the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition as they discuss sustaining the health and economy of the Gullah/Geechee Nation by preventing oil drilling and also improving emergency preparedness for the coast. Many of the Carolina communities are currently dealing with environmental harm that has been caused due to coal ash spills during the recent flooding and they do not want any of the waterways further harmed by seismic gun use and oil exploration and drilling. • Join the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition as they present the new short film, “Protect” at the St. Helena Branch Library on historic St. Helena Island, SC in the Gullah/Geechee Nation on Wednesday, October 24, 2018 at 5:30 pm.
