World Literacy Day and Climate Literacy

International (World) Literacy Day has taken place annually on September 8th since 1966. Interestingly enough, I found myself reading the Paris Climate Agreement as the clock struck twelve to usher the day in. I wanted to insure that as I spoke for the “Rise for Jobs, Climate, and Justice Rally” that I covered the major points of what many countries of the world agreed to in order to emphasize what those of us that support the agreement believe. As I read, I had to take note of the fact that the rally to be held on International Literacy Day would encompass the theme of the day which is “literacy and skills development.” Both are crucial in our stand for jobs, climate, and justice.
When I took to the podium at the rally hours later, I asked how many people had read the Paris Climate Agreement and no one raised a hand. I was taken aback by this since I was sure that those that had come out on this hot day were no doubt committed to insuring that the very principles of the agreement are adhered to and enacted.
While I stood there on International Literacy Day proudly reading the words from this historic and power filled document, I also let the crowd know that even when many people read, they do not comprehend what they are reading. That speaks volumes to why many people are still not yet engaged in insuring that policies are in place to protect the environment. The policy makers may be like the crowd and lack climate literacy or the comprehension of the agreement. So, we must educate ourselves and use our skills so that we can educated the people of the world and we can all rise up together!
Tenk GAWD fa readin and fa comprehension!
