Disya da Gullah/Geechee:  A Week Long Celebration of the Cultural Legacy of the Gullah/Geechee Nation

Disya da Gullah/Geechee
A Week Long Celebration of the Cultural Legacy of the Gullah/Geechee Nation

“Gullah/Geechee Nation Appreciation Week” began in the City of Charleston in 2012.  This proclamation was presented after the first septenary of the “Gullah/Geechee Nation International Music & Movement Festival™” (www.GullahGeechee.info) which is held in the city during even numbered years and travels to other areas of the African and Gullah/Geechee Diaspora during odd numbered years.  The festival is the culminating event of Gullah/Geechee Nation Appreciation Week which is themed “Disya da Gullah/Geechee” for 2018.

All the counties (excluding Horry County, SC) and the majority of the townships in the Gullah/Geechee Nation from Jacksonville, NC to Jacksonville, FL have participated in this celebration since 2013.   This year, Beaufort County, SC was the first county and the Town of Bluffton, SC was the first township to proclaim Gullah/Geechee Nation Appreciation Week.  The others will each host Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation (www.QueenQuet.com) and the co-founder of the festival, Kwame Sha of All Mobile Productions™ (AMP™) (www.AMPTurnItUp.com) at their council meetings to present them with proclamations as well.   The Mayor of Fernandina Beach will present that city’s proclamation at the opening event for the week, “Gullah/Geechee Famlee Day at American Beach” on Saturday, July 28, 2018 at 11:45 am just before the Noon opening drumming and libation ceremony.

Queen Quet, the Wisdom Circle Council of Elders and Assembly of Representatives for the Gullah/Geechee Nation are calling for everyone throughout the Gullah/Geechee Nation to participate in the numerous activities that will take place during Gullah/Geechee Nation Appreciation Week.  While celebrating, they should adorn themselves in Gullah/Geechee wear and gear. Many people are obtaining items and books from www.GullahGeechee.biz in advance. Throughout the week various Gullah/Geechee businesses and institutions are highlighted so that they can be financially supported and many of these locations will also be places where Gullah/Geechee items can be purchased.  In order to keep up with the numerous activities in different areas, follow “Gullah/Geechee Nation” on Facebook and @GullahGeechee on Twitter and Instagram.  People can also follow www.GullahGeecheeNation.com for all of the blog postings featuring not only the events, but providing history on Gullah/Geechees and their cultural legacy.

Gullah/Geechee families are encouraged to not only attend “Gullah/Geechee Famlee Day at American Beach” which is free and will be a day to enjoy the water and fellowship at this historic beach.   They are also encouraged to be a part of “Gullah/Geechee Reunion Day” which is Saturday, August 4th of the Gullah/Geechee Nation International Music & Movement Festival™ 2018 at the Charleston Music Hall.  Not only will this give them an opportunity to be listed in the Gullah/Geechee Famlee listing, but there will also be free DNA testing done for those that want to participate.  The latter is part of a joint partnership between the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition and Howard University.   The Gullah/Geechee Nation is seeking to continue their reconnections of the Gullah/Geechee Diaspora on the next level through this scientific endeavor and this celebration of their cultural community.
