Juneteenth Freedom Celebrations in the Gullah/Geechee Nation

Juneteenth is the oldest commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States. The Jepson Center for the Arts in Savannah, GA will host its 11th Annual celebration of Juneteenth with a Juneteenth lecture recounting the story of the Rev. Georgia Lisle by Jamaica-based lawyer and scholar Miguel A. Lorne. He will tell the story that connects Savannah to Jamaica at 6 pm on June 8th. Admission is free and open to the public.

The celebration at the Jepson Center for the Arts continues on Saturday June 10th with Juneteenth Family Day from 1 to 4 pm. The history of Juneteenth and freedom will be brought to life through cultural history dramatizations by Dr. Amir Jamal Toure and Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation (www.QueenQuet.com).

Artists demonstrations and hands-on activities will take place in the museum studios. Admission is free and open to the public.

Queen Quet will follow up this celebration with her annual appearance at the Colleton County Memorial Library in Walterboro, SC at 10 am on Tuesday, June 13th. Queen Quet will present, “Yeddi de Sounds of de Gullah/Geechee Sea Islands” which will be an interactive celebration of “Black Music Month” through songs of freedom.  This will be Queen Quet’s 17th year as a part of the Summer Reading Program at this location.  The admission is free and open to all.
 
The entire Gullah/Geechee family is invited to come together on historic St. Helena Island, SC at the “St. Helena Island Community Market” on Saturday, June 17th from 10 am to 3 pm for the “Juneteenth Celebration of Freedom.”   Bring drums, chairs, and an open spirit and support the Gullah/Geechee craft artists, authors, business owners, and chefs at the Dr. Martin L. King Jr. Memorial Park.  The children can also engage in double dutch, hoola hooping, and chess challenges throughout the day.
